  • [ 10 September 2015 ] Torishima receives an order for construction of the "Project for Upgrading of Mechanical System for Sewerage and Drainage Service" in Gujranwala

    代替えテキスト

Torishima has received an order for construction of the Project for Upgrading of Mechanical System for Sewerage and Drainage Service in Gujranwala from Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Gujranwala.

Gujranwala is the 7th biggest city in Pakistan and located in Panjab, 250km northeast of Harrapa which is a well-known archaeological site of the Indus Civilization. Besides the ancient civilization, this area is profoundly influenced by different cultures and history such as the eastern expedition by Alexander and Buddhist art which flourished during the era of Gandhara. Actually, despite the fact that Muslims account for 97% of the total population in Pakistan, you can find a variety of important cultural properties in the museum such as Buddha statues and relics of the British colonial period as well as Islamic collections.

The downtown area of Gujranwala is situated at a strategic point along with the major Grand Trunk Road highway, commonly called G.T. road, stretching from east India to west Afghanistan. The road however, has been experiencing flood damage in recent years due to the worsening performance of aging drainage pumps, especially from July to September with the high frequency of monsoonal downpour. This obstructs the flow of goods, services and people.

In order to solve this problem, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Pakistani government came to an agreement that 9 pumping stations within the area would be updated under the initiative of Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA). Torishima won a bid and received the order for supply and installation of pumps, motors, intermediate shafts, piping equipment, electric switchboards and in-house generation systems. We have launched a special team for this project, and have proceeded with the design and production work. The project is expected to be completed in December 2016.

  • [ March 2015 ] Torishima Hong Kong receives an order for a reverse pump axial turbine for the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works in Hong Kong.
Name of Pump Reserve pump axial turbine
    Size / Type IST-PGV900×800
    Quantity 1 unit
    Capacity 1.15m³/s
    Total Head 3m
    Motor Rating 21kW

Torishima Hong Kong Ltd. (THK) has received an order for a reverse pump axial turbine (IST-PGV900×800, vertical axial-flow) for the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works managed by the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Drainage Services Department (DSD).

Torishima delivered a number of engineered pumps to the Stonecutters Islands Sewage Treatment Works where two pumping stations were constructed under the government leading initiative known as the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme Project (SSDS Project) since 1995.

The reverse pump axial turbine will be installed next to the primary sedimentation tank in the plant. It will generate electricity by utilizing the potential head of wastewater from the sedimentation tank to the outfall.

Seawater is used for flushing toilets in Hong Kong, making sewage saline in the area. Primary wastewater used for power generation in this plant will therefore contain seawater too. Torishima has ensured that the water turbine is made of duplex stainless steel in order to protect the turbine from corrosion.
As for the generator, we have utilized a high efficiency and compact design permanent magnetic synchronous generator. Operators can control flow rate by adjusting speed with variable frequency drive, VFD.

Previously in 2012, Torishima had delivered a reverse pump turbine (vertical, based on double-suction pump) for the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Water Supplies Department (WSD). This turbine has exhibited stable performance for power generation to date. This reliability of the previous unit was critical for the approval of the new project.

Harnessing renewal energy has attracted increasing attention in recent years particularly among water related organizations such as WSD and DSD in Hong Kong. The demand for reverse pump turbines will be expected to grow.
Torishima is continuously contributing to improve economic and environmental conditions in Hong Kong in the years to come.
